The EU's Digital Services Act (DSA) is now operational, impacting most online platforms in its quest to increase online safety. The DSA introduces measures to combat illegal content, requiring platforms to empower users by allowing them to flag such content. Protection for minors is emphasised, with a specific ban on targeted ads based on profiling or personal data. Users will gain more transparency about the ads they encounter, and platforms are obligated to publish annual reports detailing their content moderation procedures. Notably, small enterprises meeting certain criteria are exempted from these regulations.

Compliance with the DSA is overseen by Digital Services Coordinators at the national level, who will handle user complaints and certify appeal mechanisms. Additionally, the European Board for Digital Services, comprising Coordinators and the Commission, is tasked with ensuring consistent DSA enforcement. The DSA, reflecting the EU's commitment to online security, has already been in force for Very Large Online Platforms and Search Engines since August 2023. Its extension to all other platforms marks a comprehensive step toward a safer and more transparent digital landscape.
